Summary
- To pray for someone in need, bring them to God by name, tell him what they need, ask him to meet it, and leave them in his care. That is intercessory prayer.
- Scripture asks it of us: Paul wanted “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks” made “for all men” (1 Timothy 2:1), and James wrote, “pray one for another, that ye may be healed” (James 5:16).
- Keep praying for the same person day after day; Paul asked the Ephesians to pray “with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (Ephesians 6:18).
- Most of the twelve prayers ask for us, and you can pray any of them for one person by saying their name. Three pray wholly for others: Provision in Hardship, Guidance for the Lost, and Healing and Recovery.
- A church service has its own forms of intercession, such as the Catholic Prayer of the Faithful and the Great Litany of the Orthodox Church.
- If anyone’s safety is at risk, call for emergency help first, then pray.
