  • Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:9 and Isaiah 41:10 each give the same reason not to be afraid: God is with the people they address.
  • “Be strong and courageous” comes three times in Joshua 1:6-9, spoken to Joshua after the death of Moses.
  • Hebrews 13:5-6 joins the promise given to Joshua with words from Psalm 118:6-7, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”
  • In Matthew 10:26-31 Jesus tells his disciples three times not to be afraid of people, and once to fear the One who can destroy soul and body in hell.
  • 1 John 4:18 names the fear that love drives out: “fear has to do with punishment.”

When the Bible tells people not to be afraid, it often gives a reason. In Isaiah 41:10 the reason is God’s presence: “So do not fear, for I am with you.” Moses gives Israel the same reason (Deuteronomy 31:6), the Lord gives it to Joshua (Joshua 1:9), and David gives it in Psalm 23:4.
