In the Bible, autumn is the season when the harvest is gathered in, the first rains fall and the ground is plowed for the next crop. The English Standard Version uses the word itself for the autumn rain God sends (Jeremiah 5:24), the plowing a sluggard skips (Proverbs 20:4) and the fruitless trees of late autumn (Jude 1:12).
