- Plants are the Bible’s favourite way of talking about people, because a plant cannot be hurried.
- Psalm 1:3 and Jeremiah 17:8 give the governing image, and Jeremiah supplies the honest part: the drought still arrives. The promise is supply, not exemption.
- Mark 4:26-28 puts the farmer asleep and says he does not know how the seed grows. His ignorance is in the parable on purpose.
- Jonah 4 has him delighted by a plant he did not grow and furious when it dies — and the book ends on a question about a city of a hundred and twenty thousand, with no answer recorded.
- John 15 prunes the fruitful branch as well as removing the barren one. Both get the knife.
