简短的祷告涵盖了验血或扫描、活检或手术、医生预约、失眠等待、为等待中的朋友代祷、好消息、坏消息以及医疗账单。
1928年版的《公祷书》提供了两篇传统祷告：“为即将接受手术者”和“为信靠之心”，后者祈求远离“不信的恐惧和世俗的焦虑”。
《便西拉智训》第38章告诉病人既要祷告也要看医生，“因为他的工作是必要的”，并提到医生自己也会祈求他们的治疗方案有效。
俄罗斯正教会基督徒常祈求圣潘捷列伊蒙的代祷，他是一位约于305年殉道的医生，长期以来被尊为医生的主保圣人；大多数新教徒只向神祷告。
等待期间适用的圣经经文包括诗篇112:7，“他必不惧怕凶恶的信息”，以及诗篇56:3。
