21 Bible Verses About Fasting, and the Fast Isaiah Says God Chooses

  • Jesus said “when you fast”, not if, and spent his instruction on hiding it: anoint your head, wash your face, tell nobody.
  • In Isaiah 58 God rejects the fasts of people who oppressed their workers and names the fast he chooses: loosing bonds, sharing bread and housing the poor.
  • Esther asked the Jews of Susa to fast for three days before she went to the king unsummoned; God is never named in the book.
  • Ezra fasted because he was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers after telling him God protects his people.

Scripture treats fasting as an ordinary practice: Jesus said “when you fast,” not if, and taught his followers to keep it private.
