17 Bible Verses About Hell



  • English Bibles translate more than one word as hell: Gehenna, the Valley of Hinnom at Jerusalem, in Jesus’s warnings; Hades, the realm of the dead; and the verb tartaroo in 2 Peter 2:4.
  • Mark 9:48 quotes the closing verse of Isaiah, “their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched.”
  • Matthew 25:41 says the eternal fire was “prepared for the devil and his angels,” and 25:46 uses the same word, eternal, for the punishment and for the life.
  • In Revelation 20:14 Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire, which Revelation calls “the second death.”
  • The Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Westminster Confession teach that hell is eternal; the Seventh-day Adventists hold that the lost are finally destroyed.

The Bible describes hell as the punishment that follows the final judgment, pictured as unquenchable fire and as outer darkness. Jesus speaks of it in his teaching (Mark 9:43-48; Matthew 25:31-46; Luke 16:19-31), and Revelation adds the lake of fire, “the second death” (Revelation 20:14).
