Japanese “Lord Jesus, you were moved with compassion when you saw people in need. Give me that same heart. Open my eyes to the people I pass by, soften my words, and make my hands quick to help. Amen.” That prayer asks for the compassion the Gospels describe in Jesus again and again.
Compassion and kindness in the Bible
The Gospels use one phrase again and again about Jesus: he “was moved with compassion.” He felt it for crowds who “fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd” (Matthew 9:36), for the sick (Matthew 14:14), and for a leper, whom he touched before he healed him (Mark 1:41). His best-known story about compassion is the good Samaritan. John’s Gospel notes that “the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans” (John 4:9), yet in the parable a Samaritan traveler finds a wounded stranger by the road. He “had compassion on him,” bound up his wounds and paid for his care at an inn (Luke 10:33–34). Jesus ended the story with a command: “Go, and do thou likewise” (Luke 10:37).
The letters of the New Testament turn this into daily instruction. “Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32). “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering” (Colossians 3:12); “bowels of mercies” is the old English for a heart of mercy. Jesus put the same thing briefly: “Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful” (Luke 6:36).
Compassion and kindness are close but not identical. Compassion is feeling another person’s suffering as if it were one’s own; Paul describes it when he writes that “whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). Kindness is what that feeling does: the meal, the visit, the gentle word. John joins the two: “let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18).
Traditional prayers for charity and a merciful heart
The 1928 Book of Common Prayer sets this collect for the Sunday before Lent, when the Epistle is Paul’s chapter on love, 1 Corinthians 13. “Charity” is the old word for love.
O Lord, who hast taught us that all our doings without charity are nothing worth; Send thy Holy Ghost, and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whosoever liveth is counted dead before thee. In the Orthodox Church, including the Russian Orthodox Church, the prayer of Saint Ephraim the Syrian is said in the services of Great Lent, with bows to the ground. It asks for patience and love and ends with a plea not to judge others.
O Lord and Master of my life, grant not unto me a spirit of slothfulness, of discouragement, of lust of power, of vain babbling. But vouchsafe unto thy servant the spirit of continence, of meekness, of patience, and of love. Yea, O Lord and King, grant that I may perceive my own transgressions, and judge not my brother. For people who give their working lives to caring for others, the same Book of Common Prayer asks God to bless “all who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of their fellow men,” that they may serve “the suffering, the friendless, and the needy” (“For Christian Service,” pp. 43–44).
Short prayers for kindness and compassion
For kind words
Lord, my tongue is quicker than my heart. Before I speak today, let me ask whether my words will help or hurt. When someone is sharp with me, give me “a soft answer” that “turneth away wrath” (Proverbs 15:1). Amen.
For kindness at home
God, the people I live with get the worst of me, the tiredness and the short temper I hide from everyone else. Make me kind first to them: patient with my husband or wife, gentle with my children, thoughtful toward my parents. Let our home be a place where people are safe with each other. Amen.

Lord, bless the people I work and live beside, the easy ones and the difficult ones. Help us listen to each other, share the load fairly and settle disagreements before they grow. “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). Amen.

Jesus, you said that whatever we do for “one of the least of these my brethren” we do for you (Matthew 25:40). Help me notice the stranger: the cashier, the new neighbor, the person sitting alone at church. Let me be the one who says hello. Amen.
For compassion toward those who suffer
God, I see so much suffering in the news that I have started to look away. Do not let my heart go numb. Show me the one person I can help today, whether sick, hungry, grieving or alone, and let me “weep with them that weep” (Romans 12:15). Amen.
When I am stressed and short with people
Lord, I am tired and overloaded, and it is coming out as impatience. Forgive me for snapping at people who did nothing wrong. Give me one quiet moment with you, and then let me go back to them gently. Amen.
For someone who is hard to love
Jesus, you told us, “Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you” (Luke 6:27). There is someone I find hard even to be polite to. I cannot change my feelings on my own, so I ask you to change them. Until you do, help me treat this person kindly anyway. Amen.
When someone has been unkind to me
Lord, I was hurt today, and I want to hurt back. Keep me from it. Your word says, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). Show me one good thing I can do in return, and heal the sting. Amen.
For a heart that does not judge
God, I size people up too quickly by their clothes, their accent or their past. You told Samuel that “man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Teach me to look for the heart as well. Amen.
For kindness to myself
Lord, I am harder on myself than I would ever be on a friend. You made me, and I am “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Let me receive your mercy for my own failures, so that I have mercy to give to others. Amen.
For the humility to accept kindness
God, I am good at helping and bad at being helped. When someone offers me kindness, let me receive it with thanks instead of pride. Amen.
For compassionate leaders
Lord, Scripture asks us to pray “for kings, and for all that are in authority” (1 Timothy 2:2). Give those who govern us compassion for the poor, the sick, the stranger and the unborn, and the courage to defend people who cannot defend themselves. Amen.
How to grow in compassion
Scripture ties compassion to things done. The Letter to the Hebrews asks readers to welcome strangers, “for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” (Hebrews 13:2), and Proverbs says, “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD” (Proverbs 19:17). Catholic teaching lists the corporal works of mercy, most of them taken from Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:35–36. The 1888 Manual of Prayers names seven: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick, ransoming captives and burying the dead.
Many Christians also pray for kindness toward animals. The Catholic Catechism says that animals are God’s creatures and that “men owe them kindness” (paragraph 2416).
