Prayers for Love: For a Relationship, a Marriage and a Loving Heart

The Act of Love

The Baltimore Catechism, approved for American Catholics in 1885, prints the Act of Love beside the Acts of Faith, Hope and Contrition. It is a prayer of love for God, love for the neighbor and forgiveness, in three sentences.

O my God! I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

Paul describes love in 1 Corinthians 13. In the King James Version, verses 4 to 7 read:

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

The 1928 Book of Common Prayer gives this prayer to be said over a couple at their wedding. A husband and wife can pray it for their own marriage.

O God, who hast so consecrated the state of Matrimony that in it is represented the spiritual marriage and unity betwixt Christ and his Church; Look mercifully upon these thy servants, that they may love, honour, and cherish each other, and so live together in faithfulness and patience, in wisdom and true godliness, that their home may be a haven of blessing and of peace; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

This prayer is about asking for God’s perfect love to come into our hearts and change us from the inside out. It’s about experiencing the kind of love that is pure, unending, and strong enough to heal our hurts and guide our lives. When we feel God’s love, it helps us to love others better and to feel secure no matter what happens.

Heavenly Father,

I come before You today with an open heart, longing to be filled with Your divine love. I know that Your love is perfect, pure, and everlasting, a love that casts out all fear and brings comfort and peace. Please, Lord, pour Your love into the deepest parts of my being. Let it wash over my worries, my doubts, and my insecurities.

Help me to understand the vastness of Your love for me, a love so great that You sent Your Son, Jesus, to show us the way. May Your love soften my heart where it has become hard, and may it heal the broken places within me. I want Your love to be the foundation of my life, the source from which I draw strength and compassion.

Teach me to recognize Your love in the world around me – in the beauty of creation, in the kindness of others, and in the quiet moments of reflection. As I am filled with Your love, let it overflow from me to everyone I meet. May I become a channel of Your love, sharing its warmth and light with those who are in darkness or despair.

Thank You, Lord, for the promise of Your unfailing love. Help me to rest in it, to trust in it, and to live my life as a testament to its power.

Friendships are a precious gift, and this prayer focuses on asking God to help us be better, more loving friends. It’s about being there for our friends, showing them kindness, and supporting them through thick and thin, reflecting God’s love in our interactions.

This is one of the toughest challenges Jesus gave us: to love our enemies and those who are difficult to love. This prayer is about asking God for the supernatural strength and grace to do just that. It’s about choosing love over hate, and forgiveness over revenge, even when it feels impossible.

Almighty God,

You have called us to a high standard of love, one that extends even to our enemies and to those who are hard for us to love. Lord, I confess that this is difficult for me. My human nature often wants to respond with anger, bitterness, or indifference. I need Your divine help.

Please, Father, soften my heart. Remove any resentment or unforgiveness that I hold. Fill me with Your compassion and Your perspective, allowing me to see these individuals as You see them – as people in need of Your love and grace, just as I am.

Grant me the strength to pray for their well-being, to desire good for them, and to act with kindness even when it is not reciprocated. Help me to overcome evil with good. May Your love flow through me, breaking down walls of hostility and misunderstanding.

Teach me, Lord, how to reflect Your Son, Jesus, who loved and prayed for those who persecuted Him. May my efforts to love those who are difficult bring glory to Your name and draw others to You.

For those who desire marriage, finding the right partner is very important. This prayer is about asking God for wisdom and guidance in finding a spouse who loves Him and will walk through life with faith and commitment. It’s about trusting God’s plan for our lives and relationships.

Loving Father,

You know the desires of my heart, and for those of us who long for a life partner, I lift up this prayer. Lord, if it is Your will for me to marry, I ask for Your guidance in finding a godly spouse. Lead me to someone who loves You with their whole heart, someone with whom I can build a life centered on faith, mutual respect, and deep affection.

Prepare my heart, Lord, to be the right partner for the person You have for me. Help me to cultivate virtues like patience, kindness, selflessness, and a strong commitment to You. Heal any past wounds that might hinder a healthy relationship, and give me wisdom to discern character and true compatibility.

For those who are married or in a committed relationship, keeping love alive and growing is vital. This prayer is about asking God to help nurture the love shared, to deepen understanding, patience, and affection, and to keep Him at the center of the relationship.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of my spouse/partner and the love we share. I come to You today asking for Your help to nurture and strengthen this precious bond. Pour out Your Spirit upon our relationship, filling it with Your divine love, grace, and wisdom.

Jesus taught that loving our neighbor as ourselves is one of the most important commandments. This prayer asks God to help us understand who our neighbor is and to show them genuine, practical love, just as we care for ourselves. It’s about seeing others through God’s eyes and treating them with kindness and respect.

Lord Jesus,

Forgiveness is essential for love to truly flourish. This prayer is about asking God to give us a heart that is quick to forgive others and to let go of bitterness and resentment. Fear and anxiety can often block our ability to give and receive love. This prayer asks for God’s perfect love to cast out all fear, bringing peace to our hearts and minds. It’s about trusting in God’s presence and power to overcome worries, so we can live more freely and lovingly.
