Left Ear Ringing Is Not a Biblical Sign — Here Is What the Bible Says

  • The Bible mentions ringing ears three times — 1 Samuel 3:11, 2 Kings 21:12 and Jeremiah 19:3 — always as an idiom for news shocking enough to ring in the head, and never distinguishing left from right.
  • The Hebrew verb tsalal describes a reaction to what has been heard, not a sensation that arrives first and means something afterwards.
  • The left-ear belief is Roman folk superstition, recorded by Pliny the Elder in the first century, not Scripture. The later spiritual version borrows loosely from Matthew 25:33.
  • Leviticus 19:26 forbids seeking omens and Matthew 16:4 rebukes sign-seeking; reading messages off the world’s noise puts us in charge of what God supposedly said.
  • Tinnitus is common and usually harmless, but sudden ringing in one ear, or ringing with hearing loss or dizziness, deserves a doctor. Luke was a physician; Paul told Timothy to take something for his stomach (1 Timothy 5:23).

The Bible mentions ringing ears exactly three times, always as the same figure of speech, and never with a left or a right. There is no biblical sign attached to which ear rings.
