Prayers for Mental Health: For Worry, Depression, Despair and a Loved One Who Is Ill

  • Short prayers cover worry, despair, asking for help, depression, a panic attack, inner peace, a clear head, dark thoughts at night, old wounds, feeling worthless and a calm day.
  • Three prayers are for a mentally ill family member, someone who refuses help, and the person caring for them.
  • Traditional prayers are quoted from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (“For the Despondent,” “For Quiet Confidence,” “For Trustfulness”) and Hapgood’s 1906 Orthodox service book (the Third Hour and Holy Unction).

Anxiety, depression and despair can leave room for only a few words, and a few are enough: “Lord, my mind is not well today. Stay close to me, give me strength for the next hour, and lead me to the help I need. Amen.” Longer prayers cover worry, despair, courage, sleep and a mentally ill family member.
