Prayers for New Beginnings: A New Job, a New Home, a New Chapter



  • The 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s “Direct us, O Lord” asks God to be in every work “begun, continued, and ended in thee,” and its Collect for Grace gives thanks for “the beginning of this day.”
  • Short prayers cover a new job, a move, a school term, New Year’s Day, starting over after failure, a loss or divorce, a new Christian, a new marriage, retirement and a blessing for someone else.
  • Five intercessions for a farewell and a new beginning can be read aloud with the response “Lord, hear our prayer.”
  • Scripture’s people who began again include Abram (Genesis 12:1), Israel at the Jordan (Joshua 3:4) and Ruth (Ruth 1:16).
  • Verses for a fresh start include Lamentations 3:22–23 (“new every morning”), Isaiah 43:18–19, Philippians 3:13 and Revelation 21:5.

Words for the first day of something new, whether a job, a home or a fresh start after failure: “Lord, I am beginning again. Go ahead of me into this new place. Let me leave behind what should stay behind. Show me the next step, and give me courage to take it.
