Prayers for a New Home: A House Blessing, Room by Room, and Prayers for Moving



  • A simple house blessing: gather at the door, say “Peace be to this house” (Luke 10:5), read a short passage, pray in each room and close with the Lord’s Prayer.
  • Catholics can ask a parish priest to bless a home, and on the Epiphany some write 20 + C + M + B + 26 above the door in blessed chalk; Orthodox priests bless homes with holy water each year around Theophany.
  • The 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers gives the night prayer “Visit, we beseech Thee, O Lord, this habitation.”
  • Short prayers cover looking for a place to live, signing, building, moving day, an apartment, a new city, neighbors, guests, money for the home and leaving an old home.
  • Scripture on houses includes Psalm 127:1, Joshua 24:15, Deuteronomy 6:9, Deuteronomy 20:5 on dedicating a new house, and Jeremiah 29:5–7.

To bless a new home, pray at the front door: “Lord, thank you for this home. Peace be to this house and to everyone who lives here. Keep us safe as we go out and come in, make this a place of kindness and rest, and let every guest who comes through the door feel welcome.
