Japanese To bless a home with holy water, make the sign of the cross, sprinkle a few drops in each room, and pray: “Lord, keep this house and everyone in it from all harm, and let your peace rest here. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
How to bless your home with holy water
Catholic and Orthodox parishes keep holy water blessed by a priest, usually in a font or container near the church door, and people may take some home in a clean bottle. The custom is old. The Catholic Encyclopedia of 1910 quotes Hincmar, a ninth-century archbishop of Reims, who told his priests to bless water every Sunday so that people “may carry some away in clean vessels so as to sprinkle their houses, fields, vineyards, and cattle.”
No fixed order is required for a family blessing at home. A simple way to do it:
- Gather the household at the front door. Make the sign of the cross and say the opening prayer, or one of the traditional prayers further down.
- Go from room to room. In each one, sprinkle a few drops with your fingers or a small branch, and say the short prayer for that room.
- End together with the Lord’s Prayer, or with a prayer of thanks for the home.
Catholics can also ask a priest or deacon to bless the house, and many Orthodox Christians have their priest bless the home after the feast of Theophany in January. The Orthodox Church in America describes the priest, after the Great Blessing of Water at Theophany, blessing “the people and their homes with the sanctified water.”
Prayers for each room
At the front door
Lord, bless everyone who comes through this door. Keep us safe when we go out and bring us home again. “The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore” (Psalm 121:8). Amen.
In the living room
Prince of Peace, let this be a room where we listen to each other and forgive each other, “even as Christ forgave you” (Colossians 3:13). Quiet our arguments before they grow. Let guests who sit here feel welcome. Amen.
In the kitchen and at the table
Father, bless the hands that cook here and the food that is shared at this table. Give us grateful hearts at every meal, and make us generous to anyone who is hungry. Amen.
In a bedroom
Lord, give rest to whoever sleeps in this room. Quiet the worries of the day and keep away bad dreams. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). Amen.
In a child’s room
Jesus, you welcomed children and blessed them. Watch over [name] by day and by night. Keep [him or her] safe, healthy and close to you, and let [him or her] grow up knowing your love. Amen.
Where someone is sick
Lord, you healed the sick who were brought to you. Be with [name] in this room. Ease the pain, give rest, and guide the doctors and everyone who cares for [him or her]. Amen.
Holy water and prayer go alongside a doctor’s care and never replace it. If someone at home is seriously ill, get medical help first.
Where work or study is done
Lord, bless the work done at this desk. Give clear thinking, steady effort and honesty, so that “whatsoever ye do,” it is done “heartily, as to the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). Amen.
In a room with hard memories
Lord, something painful happened in this room, and it still feels heavy. Heal the people who carry that memory. Fill this place with your peace, and let it become a place of rest again. Amen.
Thanks for the home
God, thank you for this roof, these walls, and the people who live here. Forgive us when we take them for granted. Make us content with what we have and ready to share it. “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it” (Psalm 127:1). Amen.
Traditional prayers for blessing a house
From the Catholic blessing of water
When a priest blesses holy water, one of the prayers asks that the water protect the homes where it is sprinkled. This is the English of the 1888 Manual of Prayers, prepared for American Catholics by order of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore:
O God, who for the salvation of mankind hast founded one of Thy greatest Sacraments in the element of water, graciously give ear when we call upon Thee, and pour upon this element, prepared for divers purifications, the power of Thy blessing; let Thy creature serving in Thy Mysteries, by Divine grace be effectual for casting out devils and for driving away diseases, that on whatsoever in the houses or places of the faithful this water shall be sprinkled, it may be freed from all uncleanness, and delivered from hurt. Let not the blast of pestilence nor disease remain there; let every enemy that lieth in wait depart; and if there be aught which hath ill-will to the safety and quietness of the inhabitants, let it flee away at the sprinkling of this water, that they, being healed by the invocation of Thy holy name, may be defended from all that rise up against them.

After sprinkling the people on Sunday, the priest prays for everyone under the church roof. The prayer fits a home as well:
Hear us, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God; and vouchsafe to send Thy holy Angel from Heaven, to guard, cherish, protect, visit, and defend all those that are assembled together in this house. Through Christ our Lord.

The words sung during that Sunday sprinkling come from Psalm 51. The Manual translates them, “Thou shalt sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow” (p. 112).
From the Orthodox service book
The Orthodox Church has a short prayer for people moving into a new house. It recalls the day Jesus went to stay with Zacchaeus. This is Isabel Hapgood’s 1906 English translation:
O God our Saviour, who didst deign to enter into the house of Zaccheus, unto the salvation of the same and of all who were in the house: Do thou, the same Lord, keep safe also from all harm those who have now desired to dwell here, and who together with us unworthy ones do offer unto thee prayers and supplications; blessing this their dwelling, and preserving their life free from aspersion. For unto thee are due all glory, honour and worship, together with thy Father who hath no beginning, and thine all-holy, and good, and life-giving Spirit, now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

A family praying it without a priest can say “we” where it says “those who have now desired to dwell here.”
Blessing a house in the Bible
Jesus sent out seventy disciples with this instruction: “into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house” (Luke 10:5). When he went to the house of Zacchaeus the tax collector, he said, “This day is salvation come to this house” (Luke 19:9).
Water sprinkled on a dwelling also appears in the Law of Moses. For purification after a death, “a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there” (Numbers 19:18). The prophets used sprinkling as a picture of God’s cleansing: “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean” (Ezekiel 36:25). The words “holy water” appear only once in the King James Version, in a different rite (Numbers 5:17).
Does holy water protect a home?
Catholics call holy water a sacramental: a blessed sign used with prayer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says sacramentals “always include a prayer, often accompanied by a specific sign, such as the laying on of hands, the sign of the cross, or the sprinkling of holy water (which recalls Baptism)” (paragraph 1668). It adds that they “do not confer the grace of the Holy Spirit in the way that the sacraments do” (paragraph 1670), and it warns that treating prayers or sacramental signs as if they work by “mere external performance” is superstition (paragraph 2111). In Catholic teaching, then, the water carries the Church’s prayer for the home. It is not a charm.
Orthodox teaching is close to this. An Orthodox Church in America priest writes that “‘Holy Water’ is not supernatural water, but rather water that is recognized as gift and sustenance from the hand of our Creator.”

By anointing your home with holy water, you are actively placing it under God’s authority. Trust in His power to guard you. The Bible reminds us to be prepared: “Put on the full armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11).
