- Naomi, the Bible’s best-known mother-in-law, blessed her sons’ widows: “The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband” (Ruth 1:9).
- Short prayers cover a daughter-in-law’s marriage, faith, health, pregnancy, motherhood, work, hard times, and caring for a sick husband.
- Prayers for the relationship cover a better relationship, an argument, a daughter-in-law who keeps her distance, wrong thoughts about her, and welcoming a new daughter-in-law.
- The 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s marriage prayer asks that a couple’s “home may be a haven of blessing and of peace”; the Orthodox marriage service says “the prayers of parents make firm the foundations of houses.”
- Scripture tells a man to “leave his father and his mother” (Genesis 2:24) and records in-law strife, as with Esau’s wives, who “were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah” (Genesis 26:35).
- Churches differ on praying for a daughter-in-law who has died: Catholics, Orthodox and the 1928 Episcopal prayer book pray for the departed; most other Protestants pray for the family.
