Prayers for Money: Bills, Debt, a Raise and Wisdom with Finances

  • Jesus taught his followers to pray for “our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), and short prayers here cover a bill that is due, debt, lost income, an unexpected expense, a raise, a business, budgeting, a couple’s arguments and contentment.
  • Agur’s prayer in Proverbs 30:8–9 asks God for “neither poverty nor riches.”
  • Traditional prayers come from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (“For Every Man in his Work,” p. 44) and the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers (“Against Covetousness,” p. 296).

Christians bring rent, debts and wages to God the way Jesus taught them to ask for their daily bread. For money trouble, pray: “Father, you know what I owe and what I have. Provide what we need this month, show me what to do next, and keep me from fear. Amen.”

If you cannot pay for rent, food or utilities, ask for practical help as well as praying. In the US, calling 211 connects you with local help paying bills, and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (nfcc.org) is a nonprofit network of credit counselors. In the UK, StepChange, a debt charity, answers on 0800 138 1111. Many churches also help members and neighbors in need; ask the pastor or priest.

Prayers for money needs

When a bill is due and the money is not there

Lord, the rent is due on Friday and I do not have it. You know exactly how short I am. Provide what I need, through work, through people or in a way I cannot see yet, and give me the courage to call the landlord and ask for time. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Amen.

For a way out of debt

Father, I owe more than I can pay, and it frightens me every time the phone rings. Your word says, “the borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7), and I feel it. Show me an honest plan to pay what I owe, give me the discipline to keep to it, and soften the hearts of the people I owe. Keep me from borrowing my way deeper. Amen.

After losing a job or income

Lord, the paycheck has stopped. Help us stretch what we have, lead me to new work soon, and keep this worry from turning into quarrels at home. You fed Elijah by a brook and a widow’s jar (1 Kings 17). Feed us too. Amen.

For an unexpected expense

God, the car broke down, and the repair will take everything we saved. Thank you that we had something saved. Help me find an honest mechanic and a fair price, and cover the rest of the month. Amen.

Before asking for a raise

Lord, I have worked hard, and I believe my pay is not fair. Give me the right words and the right moment to ask. If the answer is yes, make me grateful and generous. If it is no, show me whether to stay or look elsewhere. Amen.

For a business or new venture

Father, I have put my savings and my time into this work. Nehemiah prayed, “prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day” (Nehemiah 1:11), and I ask the same. Bring customers, keep me honest in every deal, and teach me when to spend and when to wait. “Establish thou the work of our hands” (Psalm 90:17). Amen.

For wisdom with money

Lord, I do not manage money well. I spend when I am anxious and hide the bills when I am afraid. Give me the wisdom you promise to anyone who asks (James 1:5): to make a budget, to keep it, and to tell the truth about what we owe. Amen.

For a couple who argue about money

God, money comes between us more than anything else. Help us talk about it calmly, make decisions together and stop keeping secrets from each other. Let us trust you more than the bank balance. Amen.

For contentment and generosity

Father, whether I have little or plenty, keep me from loving money. Your word says, “be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). Make me grateful for what I have and quick to share it with people who have less. Amen.

Prayers about money from Scripture and the prayer books

The Book of Proverbs keeps a prayer about money that asks for enough, not for wealth. It is the prayer of Agur:

Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

Proverbs 30:8–9

“Food convenient for me” means the food that is right for me. The Lord’s Prayer asks for the same thing: “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). The 1928 Book of Common Prayer has a prayer for anyone who works for a living, asking God to deliver us “from the service of mammon,” an old word for wealth treated as a master:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who declarest thy glory and showest forth thy handiwork in the heavens and in the earth; Deliver us, we beseech thee, in our several callings, from the service of mammon, that we may do the work which thou givest us to do, in truth, in beauty, and in righteousness, with singleness of heart as thy servants, and to the benefit of our fellow men; for the sake of him who came among us as one that serveth, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer (1928), Prayers, “For Every Man in his Work,” p. 44

The 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers includes this prayer among its prayers against the seven deadly sins. It asks to be kept from waste so that there is always something to give:

O Lord Jesus Christ, who though Thou wast rich yet for our sakes didst become poor, grant that all over-eagerness and covetousness of earthly goods may die in us, and the desire of heavenly things may live and grow in us: keep us from all idle and vain expenditures, that we may always have to give to him that needeth, and that giving not grudgingly nor of necessity, but cheerfully, we may be loved of Thee, and be made through Thy merits partakers of the riches of Thy heavenly treasure. Amen.

A widow’s debt in the Bible

Second Kings tells of a prophet’s widow whose creditor was coming “to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen” to pay her husband’s debt. She had nothing in the house but a pot of oil. The prophet Elisha told her to borrow empty vessels from her neighbors, shut the door and pour. The oil kept flowing until there was no vessel left, and Elisha told her, “Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest” (2 Kings 4:1–7). Christians who pray for a financial miracle often have this story in mind. In it, God’s provision paid the debt first and then kept the family.

Does God promise wealth to believers?

Scripture says that God gives the ability to earn: “it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:18). It promises that he will meet his people’s needs: “my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). It also warns that “the love of money is the root of all evil” (1 Timothy 6:10), and Jesus said, “a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15).

Christians disagree about how much to expect. Some preachers teach what is called the prosperity gospel. The Cape Town Commitment, the statement of the Third Lausanne Congress, which brought 4,200 evangelical leaders from 198 countries to Cape Town in October 2010, defines it as the teaching that believers “have a right to the blessings of health and wealth” and can obtain them through “positive confessions of faith” and gifts of money. The Commitment rejects it. It denies “that God’s miraculous power can be treated as automatic,” and denies that wealth is “always a sign of God’s blessing” or that poverty is “always a sign of God’s curse.” It also warns that many of these teachers “replace the call to repentance with the call to give money to the preacher’s organization.”

Jesus put the order this way: “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).


Prayer for Guidance in Financial Decisions

It’s easy to feel lost when facing big money choices, like taking a new job, making a large purchase, or investing. We want to do the right thing, but sometimes the path isn’t clear. This prayer asks God for wisdom and clear direction, trusting that He knows what’s best for us and wants to lead us toward stability and choices that honor Him.

Heavenly Father,

I come before You today feeling unsure about the financial decisions ahead of me. Your Word says that if any of us lacks wisdom, we should ask You, and You will give it generously. So, I am asking for Your divine guidance. Please clear my mind of confusion and anxiety, and help me to see the paths You have laid out for me.

Lord, give me a discerning heart to know right from wrong, and the courage to choose the path that aligns with Your will, even if it’s not the easiest one. Help me to understand the potential consequences of my choices and to act with integrity and foresight. I don’t want to lean on my own understanding, but in all my ways, I want to acknowledge You.

Protect me from making impulsive decisions based on fear or greed. Instead, fill me with Your peace and a quiet confidence that I am following Your lead. I trust that You will open the right doors and close the ones that are not meant for me. Show me how to use the resources You provide wisely.

Thank You for Your promise to be with me and to guide me.

When we seek God’s guidance, we acknowledge that He has a plan for us. He wants us to succeed in ways that are good for us and bring glory to Him. Remember that “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Prayer for a Grateful Heart for Current Blessings

Sometimes, we get so caught up in wanting more that we forget to appreciate what God has already given us. Whether we have a lot or a little, there are always blessings to count. This prayer helps us open our eyes to God’s daily provisions and cultivate a spirit of thankfulness, which can change our whole outlook on money and life.

Dear Lord,

Today, I want to pause and thank You for everything You have given me. Sometimes I focus too much on what I don’t have, and I forget to see the abundance of Your blessings all around me. Thank You for the roof over my head, the food I eat, the clothes I wear, and the people You have placed in my life.

Forgive me for the times I have taken Your gifts for granted or complained about my circumstances. Help me to develop a truly grateful heart, one that overflows with praise for Your goodness and Your constant care. Even in challenging times, help me find reasons to be thankful.

Lord, teach me that true wealth isn’t just about money, but about the richness of Your love, Your peace, and Your presence in my life. Help me to appreciate the simple gifts: a sunny day, a kind word, good health, and the ability to work. May my gratitude lead me to be more generous and to share what I have with others.

Thank You for the ultimate gift of Your Son, Jesus, and the hope of eternal life.

Cultivating gratitude can transform our perspective. When we are thankful for what we have, we realize how rich we truly are in God’s love. As it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer for Wisdom to Manage Money Well

Managing money wisely is a skill, and like any skill, we can ask God to help us become better at it. It’s not just about having money, but about how we use it. This prayer asks for the wisdom to budget, save, spend, and give in ways that honor God and bless our lives.

Gracious Father,

You have entrusted resources to me, and I want to be a faithful steward of all that You provide. I confess that sometimes I struggle with managing my money well. I ask You today for wisdom, Lord, the kind of wisdom that Solomon asked for, to discern how to handle my finances responsibly.

Please give me the understanding to create a budget that works, the discipline to stick to it, and the foresight to save for the future. Help me to avoid unnecessary debt and to be content with what You have given me, rather than chasing after things I don’t truly need. Remember, “For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, but the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.” (Ecclesiastes 7:12).

Prayer for Opportunities to Increase Income

Sometimes, despite our best efforts to manage what we have, we find ourselves needing more income to meet our needs or achieve important goals. This prayer is about asking God to open doors for new opportunities, whether it’s a better job, a successful business venture, or creative ways to use our talents to earn more.

Lord of all Creation,

You are the source of all good things, and You know my needs. Today, I come to You asking for Your divine help in increasing my income. I am willing to work hard and use the talents You have given me, but I need Your guidance to find the right opportunities.

Please open doors that no one can shut. Lead me to new avenues for work, or show me how to grow in my current position. If there are skills I need to learn or connections I need to make, please guide me. Give me creativity and innovation if I am to start a new venture. Remove any fear or doubt that holds me back from pursuing what You have for me.

Father, I desire this increase not for selfish gain, but so that I can provide for my family, be free from financial stress, and be more generous to others and to Your kingdom. Help me to keep a right heart attitude, trusting in You as my provider, not just in the money itself. May any success I find bring glory to Your name.

Asking God to help increase our income is about trusting Him to provide. He knows our needs and desires to see us flourish. As Deuteronomy 8:18 says, “But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.”

Prayer for Release from Debt

Debt can feel like a heavy chain, causing stress and limiting our ability to live freely and generously. This prayer is a heartfelt plea to God for help to break free from the bondage of debt, asking for wisdom, discipline, and His divine intervention to become debt-free.

Merciful Father,

I come to You today burdened by the weight of debt. It feels overwhelming, and I long for the freedom that comes from being financially unencumbered. Your Word says the borrower is slave to the lender, and I desire to be free to serve You fully with all that I have.

Lord, please grant me the wisdom to create a clear plan to pay off what I owe. Show me where I can cut expenses and how I can increase my means to make these payments. Give me the discipline to stick to this plan, even when it’s difficult, and the strength to resist temptations that would lead me further into debt.

I pray for Your divine intervention, Father. Please open unexpected avenues of provision or favor that can help accelerate this process. Help me to be patient and persistent, trusting that You are working on my behalf. I want to honor You with my finances, and I know that getting out of debt is a crucial step.

God values hard work and diligence. When we ask for His strength, He empowers us to approach our work with purpose and excellence. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Prayer for Blessings Upon Our Work/Business

Whether you are an employee, a business owner, or self-employed, your work matters to God. This prayer asks for God’s blessing upon your job, career, or business. It’s a request for His favor, wisdom, and guidance so that your work may prosper and be a source of provision and a platform for good.

Almighty God, Giver of all skills and opportunities,

I bring my work (or my business) before You today and ask for Your divine blessing upon it. You are the source of all success and prosperity. I pray that You would cause my efforts to flourish and be fruitful, according to Your good and perfect will.

Grant me wisdom in my dealings, insight in my decisions, and creativity in my tasks. Help me to be a person of integrity and excellence in my workplace or marketplace. If I am a leader, help me to lead with justice and compassion. If I am an employee, help me to be diligent and respectful.

Lord, I pray for growth and stability in my work/business. Open new doors of opportunity, bring the right clients or customers, and protect my endeavors from harm or failure. May my work not only provide for my financial needs but also be a means through which I can honor You and be a blessing to others. Help me to always remember that all success comes from You.

Prayer for Using Money to Help Others

God blesses us so that we can be a blessing to others. Money is a tool, and one of its highest purposes is to help those in need and support God’s work in the world. This prayer asks God for a heart and a willingness to use our financial resources to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Generous Father,

All that I have comes from You, and You have blessed me in so many ways. I pray today for a heart that desires to use the financial resources You’ve entrusted to me to help others and to advance Your Kingdom. Show me how I can be a conduit of Your love and provision to those who are struggling or less fortunate.

Lord, give me wisdom to discern where and how to give. Help me to see the needs around me – in my community, in my church, and around the world. Using our money to help others is a beautiful expression of our faith and love. It allows us to participate in God’s compassionate work. As Acts 20:35 reminds us, “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Prayer for Trust in God’s Provision

Ultimately, our financial security doesn’t rest in our jobs, our bank accounts, or our own efforts, but in God’s faithful provision. This prayer focuses on building unwavering trust in God as our ultimate source, believing that He will provide for all our needs according to His riches and wisdom.

Unfailing Provider, Jehovah Jireh,

My heart is often tempted to worry about money – about having enough for today, for tomorrow, and for the future. But Your Word tells me not to be anxious, because You know what I need even before I ask. Today, Lord, I pray for a deeper, unshakeable trust in Your provision for my life.

Help me to truly believe that You are my source and my sustainer. Remind me of Your faithfulness in the past, how You have always taken care of me. When fear creeps in, replace it with Your perfect peace that comes from knowing You are in control. Teach me to look to You first, before looking to my job, my savings, or any other earthly means.

Lord, even when circumstances look bleak or uncertain, help my faith to remain firm in You. I want to live with a heart that is free from the love of money, confident that You will supply all my needs according to Your glorious riches in Christ Jesus. May my life be a testimony to Your abundant care and faithfulness.

Trusting in God’s provision is foundational to our peace and financial well-being. It shifts our focus from our limited resources to His limitless ability. Matthew 6:33 encourages us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
