Prayers for Money: Bills, Debt, a Raise and Wisdom with Finances



  • Jesus taught his followers to pray for “our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), and short prayers here cover a bill that is due, debt, lost income, an unexpected expense, a raise, a business, budgeting, a couple’s arguments and contentment.
  • Agur’s prayer in Proverbs 30:8–9 asks God for “neither poverty nor riches.”
  • Traditional prayers come from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (“For Every Man in his Work,” p. 44) and the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers (“Against Covetousness,” p. 296).
  • In 2 Kings 4:1–7 Elisha helps a widow whose creditor was about to take her sons, and she sells oil to “pay thy debt.”
  • The Cape Town Commitment (Third Lausanne Congress, 2010) rejects the “prosperity gospel,” denying that wealth is “always a sign of God’s blessing.”

Christians bring rent, debts and wages to God the way Jesus taught them to ask for their daily bread. For money trouble, pray: “Father, you know what I owe and what I have.
