Prayers for a Full and Speedy Recovery, With Prayers of Thanks

  • Ten short prayers cover another person’s recovery (full, quick, after an operation, after an injury, for the medical team) and the sick person’s own prayers (slow progress, a setback, strength, a calm mind).
  • Traditional prayers are quoted from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (“A Prayer for Recovery,” p. 315; “For the Recovery of a Sick Person,” p. 597) and from the Orthodox service of Holy Unction in Hapgood’s 1906 translation.
  • Thanksgivings for a recovery come from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (pp. 315–316) and the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers (pp. 470–471).
  • Orthodox Christians often ask St. Panteleimon, a physician martyred about 305, to pray for the sick; he is named in the Holy Unction prayer.
  • Scripture records quick healings (Mark 1:31; John 4:46–53) and Hezekiah’s recovery through prayer and a poultice of figs (2 Kings 20:5–7).
  • Prayer goes alongside medical care and never replaces it.

This prayer asks for a quick and full recovery: “Lord, you know what is wrong with [name] better than any test can show. Heal [him or her] fully, bless the treatment, and give back strength soon. Amen.” Short prayers for each stage of getting better follow, with old prayers of thanks for a recovery.

Prayer goes alongside the doctor’s care and never replaces it. Keep taking the treatment, keep the appointments, and call a doctor if new or worse symptoms appear. No prayer can promise how fast a body will heal.

Prayers for someone else’s recovery

Put the person’s name where [name] appears.

For a full recovery

Father, [name] is ill and wants to be well again. Heal [him or her] completely, so that nothing is left behind to come back later. Your word says, “I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds” (Jeremiah 30:17). Do that for [name]. Amen.

For a quick recovery

Lord Jesus, when you took Peter’s mother-in-law by the hand, “immediately the fever left her” (Mark 1:31). If it is your will, let [name] get better quickly too. Let the medicine work, let the fever break, and let each day bring a little more strength. Amen.

After an operation

Lord, the operation is over. Help the wound close cleanly, keep infection away, and bring [name] through the first days without complications. Give [him or her] patience with the stitches, the pain and the rules the surgeon has set. Amen.

After an accident or injury

God, [name] was hurt, and the body now has a lot of mending to do. Knit the bones, heal the bruises and the torn places, and take away the shock of what happened. Give [him or her] courage for the physical therapy and the first steps back. Amen.

For the doctors and nurses

Lord, bless the people treating [name]: the doctors who decide on the treatment, the nurses who give it, and the therapists who help [him or her] move again. Give them clear minds and careful hands. Amen.

Prayers when you are the one recovering

For your own recovery

Lord, I am sick and I want to be well. Heal me fully, and let me return to my family and my work. “O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me” (Psalm 30:2). Let me say those words soon. Amen.

When recovery is slow

Father, I expected to be better by now. Give me patience with a body that heals more slowly than I would like, and help me notice the small gains: less pain this week, a longer walk, a full night’s sleep. “My times are in thy hand” (Psalm 31:15). Amen.

After a setback

Lord, I was getting better, and now I have gone backward. Keep me from losing heart. Show the doctors what went wrong, and start the healing again. “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee” (Isaiah 41:10). Amen.

For strength and energy

God, the illness has left me weak and tired, and simple things wear me out. Your word says, “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength” (Isaiah 40:29). Give me back my strength a little at a time. Amen.

For a calm mind while healing

Lord, the body is mending, but my mind keeps racing: about the next test, the bills, the time off work. Heal my worry along with my body. You heal “the broken in heart,” and you bind “up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). Give me peace tonight. Amen.

Prayers for recovery from the Anglican and Orthodox service books

Each prayer is quoted as printed. Where a book prints “he” or “him,” say “she” or “her” for a woman, and say the person’s name where it prints N.

A prayer for recovery, from the Book of Common Prayer

The Episcopal Church’s 1928 prayer book gives this prayer in its order for the Visitation of the Sick.

O GOD of heavenly powers, who, by the might of thy command, drivest away from men’s bodies all sickness and all infirmity; Be present in thy goodness with this thy servant, that his weakness may be banished and his strength recalled; that his health being thereupon restored, he may bless thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer (1928), Visitation of the Sick, “A Prayer for Recovery,” p. 315

The same book has a shorter prayer for use at home, which asks a blessing on the sick person and on the people treating him:

O MERCIFUL God, giver of life and health; Bless, we pray thee, thy servant, [N.], and those who administer to him of thy healing gifts; that he may be restored to health of body and of mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer (1928), Family Prayer, “For the Recovery of a Sick Person,” p. 597

An Orthodox prayer for a speedy recovery

In the Orthodox service of Holy Unction, the anointing of the sick, the choir sings this hymn asking Christ for a “speedy visitation.” The text is from Isabel Hapgood’s 1906 English translation of the Orthodox service book.

Thou who alone art a speedy succour, O Christ, manifest thy speedy visitation from on high upon thy sick servant; deliver him (her) from his (her) infirmities, and cruel pain; and raise him (her) up again to sing praises unto thee, and without ceasing to glorify thee: through the prayers of the Birth-giver of God, O thou who alone lovest mankind.

Hapgood, Service Book of the Holy Orthodox-Catholic Apostolic (Greco-Russian) Church (1906), The Office of Holy Unction, pp. 340–341

The main prayer of the same service asks the prayers of the Virgin Mary and of the saints it calls the “holy and healing Unmercenaries.” Among them is St. Panteleimon, whom Orthodox Christians often ask to pray for a sick person. The Orthodox Church in America’s life of the saint says he was a physician who treated the sick “without charge.” The 1911 Catholic Encyclopedia dates his martyrdom to about the year 305 and calls the stories of his life late legends, while early writers attest the martyrdom itself. More on him is in the page on St. Pantaleon (Panteleimon). Most Protestants pray to God alone, and every other prayer here is addressed to God.

Prayers of thanks for a recovery

When a sick person starts to improve, the 1928 Book of Common Prayer has a thanksgiving that also asks God to finish the healing.

GREAT and mighty God, who bringest down to the grave, and bringest up again; We bless thy wonderful goodness, for having turned our heaviness into joy and our mourning into gladness, by restoring this our brother to some degree of his former health. Blessed be thy Name that thou didst not forsake him in his sickness; but didst visit him with comforts from above; didst support him in patience and submission to thy will; and at last didst send him seasonable relief. Perfect, we beseech thee, this thy mercy towards him; and prosper the means which shall be made use of for his cure: that, being restored to health of body, vigour of mind, and cheerfulness of spirit, he may be able to go to thine house, to offer thee an oblation with great gladness, and to bless thy holy Name for all thy goodness towards him; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer (1928), Visitation of the Sick, “A Thanksgiving for the Beginning of a Recovery,” pp. 315–316

The Catholic Manual of Prayers of 1888, prepared by order of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, gives a thanksgiving for the person who has recovered to say. These lines come from it; the third sentence is Psalm 118:17.

Glory be to Thee, O Lord, glory be to Thee, for delivering me from the terrors of death, and restoring me to my health again; glory be to Thee. I called upon the Lord in my trouble, and the Lord heard me. I shall not die, but live and declare the works of the Lord. … O Lord God, who hast in Thy tender mercy prolonged my days in this world, give me grace to spend this life, which Thou hast now lengthened, in Thy service.

A Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity (1888), “Thanksgiving for Recovery,” pp. 470–471

A shorter thanksgiving in plain words:

Thank you, Lord, for bringing [name] through this illness. Thank you for the doctors, the nurses, the medicine and everyone who helped. Keep [him or her] well, and let the health you have given back be used well. “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:2). Amen.

Get-well wishes with a blessing

These lines can go in a card or a message to someone who is recovering:

  • Praying for your full recovery. May God give you strength today and rest tonight.
  • Get well soon. I am asking God to heal you quickly and completely.
  • “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” (3 John 2)
  • “The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.” (Psalm 41:3)
  • God bless you and speed your recovery. We are praying for you and your family.

Quick recoveries in the Bible

The Gospels record several healings that happened at once. When Jesus took Peter’s mother-in-law by the hand, the fever left her and she got up and served her guests (Mark 1:31). A nobleman whose son lay sick at Capernaum asked Jesus to come and heal him. Jesus told him, “Go thy way; thy son liveth.” On the way home, the man’s servants met him and said the fever had left the boy “yesterday at the seventh hour,” the same hour Jesus had spoken (John 4:46–53).

King Hezekiah’s recovery came by prayer and by a remedy together. When he was “sick unto death,” he prayed and wept (Isaiah 38:1–3). God answered through the prophet Isaiah, “I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee” (2 Kings 20:5). Isaiah then had a lump of figs laid on Hezekiah’s boil, “and he recovered” (2 Kings 20:7).

Not every recovery in Scripture is quick, and not every sick believer is healed. The older prayer books ask for recovery and leave the timing to God. The 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers has a sick person ask God to “bless all the means that are used for my recovery, and restore me to my health, if it be Thy will, in Thy good time.” For more prayers during an illness, see short prayers for the sick, and before an operation, prayers before surgery.

A last prayer for the days of healing

Lord, you are with [name] in the hospital room and at home, on the good days and the bad ones. Finish the healing you have begun, and give [him or her] back to us strong and well. Amen.

During these times, the support and encouragement of loved ones can be like the warm rays of dawn piercing through the night—offering hope, warmth, and direction. It is in these moments that we reach out in prayer, not just for the healing of our bodies, but for the strengthening of our bonds with those around us.

Heavenly Father,

In Your boundless love, You have given us the gift of community—a web of hearts intertwined, designed to uplift and hold each other through every season of life. In moments of weakness, may we find collective strength by leaning on one another, embodying the unity You so desire for Your children.

Bless our conversations, that they may be laced with grace and seasoned with kindness. And through this journey, knit us closer together, that our shared struggles and victories may testify of Your goodness and mercy.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

The prayer for support and encouragement from loved ones exemplifies the power of community in our lives. As each voice joins in a chorus of prayer, we are reminded that we are never truly alone in our battles. This network of care, woven by divine hands, holds us up, propelling us towards recovery and growth. In seeking the support of those around us, we not only draw nearer to our own healing but also deepen the bonds that tether our hearts to each other and to God.

Prayer for Protection Against Complications and Setbacks

When facing health challenges, the journey towards healing can often feel like navigating through a storm. The fear of complications or setbacks looms large, threatening to shake our resolve and dim the light of hope. It’s in these moments that a prayer for protection becomes a beacon, guiding us back to peace and safety. Grant me the fortitude to trust in Your timing and plan, knowing that each moment unfurls under Your watchful eyes. Let my heart remain steadfast, drawing strength from the wellspring of Your eternal love.

In Jesus’ name, I pray,

Amen.

In the landscape of life, threads of challenge intertwine with strands of grace, creating a masterpiece under the watchful eye of the Divine. A prayer for protection against complications and setbacks not only seeks safety on this journey but also deepens our relationship with God, reminding us of His ceaseless care and authority over every aspect of our lives. Through faith, we find the courage to face each day, buoyed by the knowledge that we are never alone.

Prayer for Thankfulness for the Gift of Life and Health

Gratitude transforms the way we see our life and health. It’s like sunlight filtering through the leaves, casting vibrant patterns on the ground below. A prayer focused on gratitude reminds us of the countless blessings we often overlook, including the remarkable gift of recovery and the strength we draw from our faith.

In the quiet moments of reflection, I find my heart swelling with gratitude. For the breath that fills my lungs and the beating of my heart, I thank You. You are the Creator of life, the Restorer of health, and the Comforter in my times of need.

Lord, as I walk this path of recovery, help me to see Your hand in every step of my journey. Open my eyes to the beauty of life, the strength of my body, and the resilience of my spirit that You have so graciously given. Amen.

Guide us to understand that healing may not always come in the form we expect, but that You are always working for our good. Strengthen our hearts to trust in Your plan, knowing that Your ways are higher than ours. May we rest in the assurance that nothing is impossible for You and let this faith be the cornerstone of our recovery.

In moments of doubt, remind us of Your promises and hold us close to Your unending love. Let our journey of healing be a testament to Your power, grace, and unfailing compassion.

Amen.

It’s a reminder that while we may not control the course of events, there is comfort in surrendering to a greater plan and purpose. This prayer is a step towards embracing that faith, aligning our hearts with His will, and finding peace amidst the storms of life.

Prayer for Gratitude for Medical Professionals and Caregivers

In moments of illness and recovery, the role of medical professionals and caregivers cannot be overstated. They serve as the hands and feet of healing, often becoming the unsung heroes in our journey towards wellness. Offering a prayer of gratitude for these individuals not only acknowledges their invaluable contribution but also reflects the heart of a grateful recipient. We pray that You replenish their energy, guard them against burnout, and fill their lives with Your peace that surpasses understanding.

Through their dedication, may we recognize the boundless scope of Your care and the depth of Your love. Help us to support them not just in words but in deeds, acknowledging the sacrifices they make every day.

In Jesus’ name, we pray,

Amen.

This prayer focuses on finding that sanctuary not in the world around us, but within the embrace of our faith. It acknowledges the rough seas but reminds us of the calm harbor in God’s love, offering an anchor for our weary hearts.

Heavenly Father,

In the shadow of my discomfort and the echo of my pain, I reach out to You for the comfort and peace only You can provide. Like a child scared of the dark, I seek the light of Your presence to illuminate my heart and ease my fears.

In the garden of my turmoil, let Your love be the balm that soothes my wounds and the warm embrace that shelters me from my storm. Grant me the serenity that comes not from understanding my suffering, but from understanding Your presence beside me, through every breath and heartbeat.

Help me to remember, like the sun that shines after the rain, that Your grace is sufficient, Your power made perfect in weakness. May this trial not be a thief of joy but a teacher of faith, revealing not what I have lost but what I am to gain—closer communion with You.

Amen.

As we navigate through the valleys of pain and discomfort, our prayer for comfort and peace becomes not just a whisper in the dark but a steadfast declaration of faith. It is a testament to our belief that, even when the night seems endless, the dawn will come. In seeking God’s peace, we find not just solace but strength, not merely an escape from our trials but an assurance that we are never alone in facing them.

Prayer for Strength and Endurance During Recovery

In the journey of recovery, there are mountains to climb and challenges to overcome. Often, it’s not just about physical healing, but also about mustering the inner strength and endurance to face each day afresh. A prayer for strength and endurance does more than ask for healing—it seeks an infusion of courage, persistence, and resilience directly from the source of all might.

A Prayer for Strength and Endurance During Recovery

Heavenly Father,

In this season of recovery, we lift our hearts and hands to You, knowing that every moment of strength comes from You alone. Like the eagle that soars on wind currents unseen, grant us the grace to rise above our circumstances, sustained by Your everlasting arms. May Your presence be a constant reminder that we do not walk this journey alone.

Lord, imbue us with endurance that defies the odds. When our spirits waver and our bodies weaken, rekindle the fire of hope within us. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard our hearts and minds, keeping us steadfast.

As we walk through this valley, teach us to embrace each small victory, knowing that through Your power, we are being renewed day by day. Help us to remember that, even in weakness, there is strength to be found in You, and that in your perfect timing, healing, both inside and out, will come.

In Your mighty name, we pray,

Amen.

Prayer is a powerful tool in navigating life’s challenges, especially when it comes to health and recovery. A Prayer for Patience and Trust in the Recovery Process centers on surrendering our need for immediate results to understand and embrace the virtue of patience. In the labyrinth of healing, where progress can sometimes feel painstakingly slow, this prayer invites us to lean into trust—trust in God’s plan, timing, and understanding that our physical healing is also an opportunity for spiritual fortification. It’s about seeing the beauty in the waiting and the lessons we learn in the pauses of life.

Heavenly Father,

In the quiet moments of my recovery, I come before You seeking strength—not just of body, but of spirit. Grant me the patience to endure this process, to embrace each day with grace, even when progress seems invisible to my eager eyes. Remind me, Lord, that You are the divine healer, and in Your wisdom, every moment of delay is purposeful, every second of pain is refining.

Teach me to trust in Your timing, to release my grasp on my plans, and to hold tightly to Your promises. Let me see my recovery not as a race, but as a journey—a pathway You have lovingly laid out for me, filled with lessons of perseverance, faith, and reliance on You.

May my heart find rest in the assurance that You are with me, guiding each step and breathing life into my weary bones. Help me to remember that in the grand landscape of life, every thread of challenge is interwoven with strands of Your grace, creating a masterpiece that speaks of Your love and care.

Amen.

It’s an acknowledgment that patience and trust are not merely virtues to be aspired to but are foundational pillars in building a relationship with God, especially in times of vulnerability. This prayer serves as a gentle reminder that even when the road to recovery is long and fraught with setbacks, there is a powerful strength in surrendering to God’s timing, allowing His peace to permeate our hearts and minds. Through patience and trust, we find not only healing but powerful growth and unwavering faith.

Prayer for Restoration of Vitality and Energy

In the bustling rhythm of modern life, our vitality and energy are often the first to deplete. Much like a river that runs dry, so can our spirits when overwhelmed by the demands of daily responsibilities. It’s in these moments, we turn towards prayer, not just as a plea but as a heartfelt conversation with God to replenish what has been drained and to ignite the divine spark within us once again.

Heavenly Father,

In Your boundless mercy, You renew the face of the earth and refresh the weary souls. Today, I come before You, humbly asking for the restoration of my vitality and energy. Like the eagle that soars on the wind, lift me above my fatigue and weariness. Infuse every fiber of my being with Your strength and vigor.

In the quiet moments of exhaustion, remind me that You are the inexhaustible Source of all life. Let Your healing waters flow through me, clearing away any sickness of body, mind, or spirit. Renew in me the joy of Your salvation, and guide me to rest in Your presence, where true restoration is found.

May I rise each morning with renewed spirit, ready to meet the challenges of the day with grace and courage. For in You, I find my strength and my rest. Lead me in Your paths of righteousness, that my life might bear witness to Your unfailing love and power.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Prayers for vitality and energy tap into the deep yearning for a life lived fully and energetically, aligned with God’s purpose. They are a testament to our dependence on God for every breath and our trust in His ability to renew us completely. Such prayers not only seek a rejuvenation of physical strength but also a spiritual awakening, promising a journey towards wellness that is holistic and deeply rooted in divine grace.
