  • Romans 8:20 says the creation “was subjected to frustration”, using mataiotes, the Septuagint’s word for the “meaningless” (虚空) of Ecclesiastes.
  • “Fret” in Psalm 37 translates charah, to heat oneself in vexation, and verse 8 says it “leads only to evil.”
  • Habakkuk 1:2-3 is a complaint addressed to God, and God answers it in verse 5.
  • Paul pleaded three times for his thorn to be taken away and records the answer “My grace is sufficient for you.”
  • Isaiah 40:29-31 answers Israel’s complaint that “my cause is disregarded by my God.”

The Bible says the whole creation “was subjected to frustration,” not by its own choice, and in hope of being set free. Paul writes this in Romans 8:20-21, and Ecclesiastes 2:22-23 describes the same thing in daily work that gives no rest even at night. Habakkuk asks God “How long, Lord” (Habakkuk 1:2-3). Job searches for God without finding him and still says God knows the way he takes (Job 23:10), and Jonah is angry enough to wish himself dead…
