概要

  • In John 3:3 the Greek word translated “again”, anothen, can also mean “from above”, and Nicodemus takes it as “a second time”.
  • Jesus speaks of being “born of water and the Spirit” (John 3:5), and Ezekiel 36:25-27 promises clean water and God’s Spirit together.
  • The verb for giving new birth, anagennao, appears in the New Testament only in 1 Peter 1:3 and 1:23, and 1 Peter 1:23 names the seed as the word of God.
  • The first letter of John describes those born of God by belief that Jesus is the Christ (5:1), love (4:7), conduct (3:9) and overcoming the world (5:4).
  • The Catholic Catechism teaches that baptism brings about the new birth; the Baptist Faith and Message calls baptism a symbol of the new life.

In the Bible, being born again is a new birth that God gives by his Spirit and through his word. Jesus tells Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are “born again” (John 3:3), and Peter writes that believers “have been born again” through “the living and enduring word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).
