- Gwen is not in the Bible and has no Hebrew form or meaning.
- It is Welsh: gwen is the feminine form of gwyn, “white, blessed.” It is also a short form of Gwendolen, Gwenllian and other names beginning with Gwen.
- Guinevere comes from the Welsh Gwenhwyfar, “white phantom,” and Jennifer is its Cornish form.
- The traditional Welsh Bible begins every Beatitude with gwyn, “blessed” (Matthew 5:3–11), and uses forms of it for “white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18; Psalm 51:7).
- Gwen Teirbron, a Breton holy woman of legend, is commemorated by the Catholic Church on 3 October.
- Saint Winifred, in Welsh Gwenfrewi, has gwen in her name; her well at Holywell became the National Shrine for England and Wales in 2023.
