  • Isaiah 46:10 grounds God’s knowledge of the future in his being God, and the next verse describes a man he will summon from the east, whom Isaiah 45:1 calls Cyrus.
  • Jeremiah 29:11 comes from a letter to exiles in Babylon and promises their return after seventy years.

The Bible says the future belongs to God, who knows the end from the beginning, while the people who plan for it do not know what tomorrow will bring. Isaiah 46:10 makes the first claim, Ecclesiastes 8:7 and James 4:13-15 make the second, and Proverbs 16:9 holds both together: people plan their course, and the Lord establishes their steps.
