20 Bible Verses About Mentorship, from Moses and Joshua to Paul and Timothy

  • Jethro told Moses, “You are not able to do it alone,” and Moses “listened to the voice of his father-in-law” and appointed judges for the smaller cases (Exodus 18).
  • Moses commissioned Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and Deuteronomy 34:9 says Joshua was full of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him.
  • Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit and took up Elijah’s cloak after he was taken (2 Kings 2).

In the Bible, mentorship appears in pairs, an older servant of God training a younger one, and in teaching handed down to the next generation.
