Summary

The Bible treats rest as something God commands and gives. The Sabbath law stops work one day in seven for the whole household (Exodus 20:9-10), and Jesus calls the weary to him for rest (Matthew 11:28-30). The psalms speak of lying down to sleep in safety (Psalm 4:8) and of a soul calmed “like a weaned child with its mother” (Psalm 131:2).
