18 Bible Verses About Vanity



  • In Ecclesiastes, Psalm 144:4 and Proverbs 31:30, vanity or its equivalent translates the Hebrew hebel, vapor or breath.
  • Ecclesiastes opens with “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity” (1:2), repeats it in 12:8, and ends with the command to fear God and keep his commandments (12:13).
  • In Luke 12:20, God asks the rich fool “whose will those things be,” the matter Psalm 39:6 raises when it says the one who heaps up riches “does not know who will gather them.”
  • The conceit of Philippians 2:3 is kenodoxia, empty glory, which the King James Version translates “vainglory.”
  • Matthew 6 applies the same warning to giving, prayer and fasting done to be seen: “they have their reward.”

The Bible uses vanity in two senses: what passes like a breath, and the empty glory a person seeks. Ecclesiastes opens with “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity” (1:2), and Psalm 144:4 calls a human life a breath.
