Prayers for Home Protection: Traditional and Short Prayers to Guard and Bless a House

  • The Catholic Compline prayer “Visit, we beseech Thee, O Lord, this habitation, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy” is quoted from the 1888 Manual of Prayers, with the “Hear us, O holy Lord” prayer the Roman Ritual uses when blessing homes.
  • The 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s “Lighten our darkness” asks God to defend the household “from all perils and dangers of this night.”
  • Psalm 91, read in the Orthodox Sixth Hour and Great Compline, promises that no “plague come nigh thy dwelling”; Russian Orthodox Christians call it “Живый в помощи.”
  • Short prayers cover the property, doors and windows, children, peace between family members, health, an unsettled house, household decisions, guests, thanks for a home, a break-in and dedicating a home to God.
  • Orthodox parishes bless homes with holy water after Theophany, Catholics can ask a priest for the Roman Ritual’s blessing of homes, and Protestants bless a house with prayer and Scripture.
  • “Hedge of protection” comes from Job 1:10, where Satan says God has made “an hedge about him, and about his house.”

An old Catholic night prayer asks God to “Visit … this habitation, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy.” In plain words: “Lord, watch over this house and everyone in it. Keep out thieves, fire and every evil, and let your angels guard us while we sleep. Let your peace live here. Amen.” Prayer goes alongside ordinary care for a home and never replaces it.
