Samenvatting
- Desmond is not in the Bible. It is an anglicised Irish Deasmhumhain, “south Munster” — a region in southern Ireland that was once a kingdom, carried as a surname before becoming a given name.
- Desmond Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for opposing apartheid and became the first Black Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986.
- In 1995 Nelson Mandela asked him to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where perpetrators could apply for amnesty only if they told what they had done fully and publicly.
- The commission’s name states the order, and the order is the argument: truth, then reconciliation.
- Scripture works the same way — Nathan’s “You are the man”, Joseph telling his brothers plainly what they intended, Zacchaeus doing sums before the joy. It never offers a forgiveness that skips the facts.
