《希伯来书》说耶稣“称他们为弟兄，也不以为耻”（希伯来书 2:11），保罗称他为“许多弟兄中作长子”（罗马书 8:29）。
耶稣说，凡遵行他天父旨意的人，“就是我的弟兄姊妹和母亲了”（马太福音 12:50），复活后他称门徒为“我的弟兄”（马太福音 28:10；约翰福音 20:17）。
《希伯来书》将这种兄弟关系建立在道成肉身的基础上：耶稣分享了血肉之躯，并且“凡事该与他的弟兄相同”（希伯来书 2:14–17）。
天主教教义称信徒是基督的弟兄，“并非出于本性，而是出于恩宠的恩赐”（《天主教教理》654条）；新教教义则谈到收养。
福音书提到了耶稣的兄弟姊妹（马可福音 6:3）；新教通常认为他们是马利亚后来所生的孩子，东正教认为是约瑟前妻所生的孩子，天主教则认为是近亲。
后期圣徒教导说，耶稣作为天父灵体儿女中的长子，是我们的长兄。
