  • Isaiah 43:1 grounds Israel’s belonging in three acts of God, creating, redeeming and naming the nation: “you are mine.”
  • The word belong appears in 1 Corinthians 12:15, where a foot that says it does not belong to the body is still part of it.
  • Romans 8:15 and Galatians 4:6-7 describe belonging to God as adoption, with the cry “Abba! Father!” that Jesus prays in Mark 14:36.
  • 1 Peter 2:10 applies Hosea’s promise to “Not My People” to believers: “now you are God’s people.”
  • Hebrews 11:13-16 calls Abraham and his family strangers and exiles on the earth, and Revelation 21:3 ends with God dwelling with his people.

The Bible speaks of belonging in two directions, to God and to a people. God says to Israel “you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1), and Ruth, a Moabite, takes Naomi’s people and Naomi’s God together (Ruth 1:16).
