概要
- Five hundred has no symbolic meaning in Scripture, but it appears in one of the boldest sentences in the New Testament.
- 1 Corinthians 15:6 says the risen Christ appeared to more than five hundred at once, “most of whom are still living” — an invitation to check, written roughly twenty-five years after the event.
- The passage is older than the letter, since Paul says he is handing on what he received, making it among the earliest Christian material in existence.
- The other notable 500 is the parable of the two debtors (Luke 7:41-42), where a denarius was a day’s wage and the point is the ratio.
- Round numbers appear because ancient counting favoured fives and hundreds. Their resistance to interpretation is what makes them read like records.
