聖書における木の意味:ありふれたものから聖なるものへ

  • 聖書において木とは、聖なるものが作られる材料であり、また人が処刑されるものでもある。聖書の最初と最後で、同じ素材が使われているのです。
  • 契約の箱や幕屋の家具はアカシア材で作られています(出エジプト記25章10節)。これはシナイ半島に自生する棘のある砂漠の木で、地元の低木に金が被せられたものです。
  • 創世記22章6節では、捧げ物のための木をイサクの背に負わせています。キリスト教の読者は、初期の時代からそこに別のものの形を見出してきました。
  • ガラテヤ人への手紙3章13節は申命記21章23節を引用し、「木にかけられた者は皆、呪われている」と述べています。新約聖書の著者は、十字架を指す専門用語ではなく、木材を指す一般的な言葉を選び続けています。
  • 聖書において木は決して貴重なものではありません。だからこそイザヤ書44章では、丸太の半分で夕食を調理し、残りで偶像を拝む人を嘲笑しているのです。
