Deuteronomy 8:5 calls Israel’s hunger and manna in the wilderness the Lord’s discipline, “as a man disciplines his son.”
Hebrews 12:5-6 quotes Proverbs 3:11-12 and argues that discipline is a mark of being God’s son.
The Greek paideuo covers training as well as correction; the ESV renders it “disciplines” in Hebrews 12:6 and “training” in Titus 2:12.
Ephesians 6:4 limits a father’s discipline before assigning it: fathers are not to provoke their children to anger.
Matthew 18:15-17 sets out three steps, a private word, witnesses and the church, before a brother is treated as an outsider.
