Summary

  • Exodus 20:12 names the mother beside the father in the Ten Commandments, and Leviticus 19:3 repeats the command with the mother named first.
  • Proverbs sets a mother’s teaching beside a father’s instruction (1:8; 6:20), and 2 Timothy 1:5 traces Timothy’s faith through his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.
  • Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah and the Shunammite woman were all without children before the births their stories record.
  • From the cross Jesus gives Mary into the beloved disciple’s care (John 19:26-27); Catholic teaching also reads the words as making her a mother to the church.

The Bible tells children to honour their mothers, and it compares God’s care for his people with a mother’s care for her child. The command comes in Exodus 20:12 and again in Ephesians 6:1-3, and God speaks as a mother in Isaiah 49:15 and Isaiah 66:13.
