16 Bible Verses About Negative Thoughts



  • Philippians 4:8 lists what to think about, and it follows directly from the command to bring every anxiety to God in prayer (Philippians 4:6-7).
  • Romans 12:2 and Ephesians 4:23 both describe the renewing of the mind as part of the change in a believer’s life.
  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 speaks of taking every thought captive in the setting of Paul’s dispute with opponents in Corinth.
  • In Psalm 42:5 and Lamentations 3:21-24 the speaker addresses his own downcast soul and calls God’s love to mind.
  • The King James Version renders 2 Timothy 1:7 “a sound mind” where the NIV has “self-discipline”.

The Bible has no phrase for negative thoughts, but it tells believers what to dwell on and how to answer a downcast mind. Paul points to whatever is true and noble (Philippians 4:8) and to a mind renewed (Romans 12:2). The psalmists question their own downcast souls (Psalm 42:5) and ask God to test their anxious thoughts (Psalm 139:23-24). Jesus tells his hearers not to worry about tomorrow (Matthew 6:34).
