19 Bible Verses About Nervousness



  • Philippians 4:6 and Matthew 6:34 use the Greek verb merimnao, to be anxious or to worry, and 1 Peter 5:7 uses the related noun merimna.
  • Psalm 56 and Psalm 34 are both tied by their headings to David’s time in Gath, where 1 Samuel 21:12 says he was “very much afraid.”
  • The command not to fear is joined to the promise of God’s presence in the words to Israel (Isaiah 41:10), to Joshua (Deuteronomy 31:6-8, Joshua 1:9) and to Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:8).

The Bible speaks to nervousness through its words for fear and anxiety, and one answer it gives is that God is present. The Lord tells the young Jeremiah, “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you” (Jeremiah 1:8), and Israel and Joshua hear the same command joined to the same promise (Isaiah 41:10, Joshua 1:9).
