  • John 16:8 and James 2:9 use the Greek verb elencho, to convict, reprove or expose; Hebrews 11:1’s “conviction of things not seen” uses the noun formed from it, elenchos.
  • Nathan brought David to confession with a story about a stolen lamb, and David’s “I have sinned against the LORD” was met in the same verse with “The LORD also has put away your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13).
  • 2 Corinthians 7:10 separates godly grief, which produces repentance that leads to salvation, from worldly grief, which produces death.

In the Bible, conviction is the exposing of sin so that a person sees and admits it. Jesus gives that work to the Helper he will send (John 16:8). It comes to David through Nathan’s “You are the man!” (2 Samuel 12:7) and to the crowd at Pentecost (Acts 2:37).
