Morning Prayers of Thanks for a New Day: Traditional and Short Prayers

  • The Psalms already pray in the morning: “I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me” (Psalm 3:5), and Mark 1:35 records Jesus praying “a great while before day.”
  • The Russian Orthodox morning prayer to the Holy Trinity, “От сна воста́в, благодарю́ Тя, Свята́я Тро́ице,” is quoted in Church Slavonic with a literal English translation, alongside a thanksgiving from the Orthodox Matins morning prayers in Hapgood’s 1906 translation.
  • The 1928 Book of Common Prayer gives thanks “for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night,” dedicates the new day to God, asks protection in “A Collect for Grace” and gives thanks for everything in “A General Thanksgiving.”
  • The 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers gives a prayer to say “as soon as you are awake” and a morning offering that thanks God for bringing the reader “safe to the beginning of another day.”
  • Fifteen short prayers cover waking, health, family, daily bread, mercy, guidance, protection, strength, kind words, work, worry, serving others, the morning’s beauty, the world and giving the day to God.

A short morning prayer of thanks: “Thank you, Lord, for keeping me through the night and waking me to this new day. Thank you for life, for the people I love and for your mercy, new again this morning. Guide me, guard me and make me thankful in everything today.
