Summary
- Psalm 122:6 is the Bible’s own prayer for Israel: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.”
- Short prayers cover peace, the safety of ordinary people, leaders, captives and their families, the wounded and grieving, Christians in the Holy Land, the Jewish people, reconciliation, and the one praying.
- Jesus wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41–42), and Paul wrote that his “prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved” (Romans 10:1).
- Petitions from the Orthodox Great Litany, in Hapgood’s 1906 translation, pray “for the peace of the whole world” and “for every city and land.”
- Churches differ on the modern state: 82% of white U.S. evangelicals told Pew in 2013 that God gave the land to the Jewish people, while the Catholic Church said in 1985 that the state should be viewed by the principles of international law, not in a religious perspective.
