- Nicholas is in the Bible in another spelling: Nicolas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism, is one of the seven chosen in Acts 6:5.
- The KJV, NIV and NASB spell the name Nicolas and the ESV Nicolaus; Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian Bibles have Nicolás, Nicolau, Nicolas and Nicola.
- The Greek Nikolaos means “victory of the people,” from nikē en laos. The name has no Hebrew origin.
- Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century bishop of Myra and the origin of Santa Claus, is not in the Bible.
- Other saints of the name include Nicholas of Tolentino and the English martyr Nicholas Owen.
