Saint Vladimir of Kiev
- Western calendar
- Not kept
- Orthodox calendar
- 15 July (28 July on the old calendar)
- Honoured as
- Equal to the Apostles, Enlightener of Rus'
Vladimir was the grandson of Saint Olga but was raised a pagan, and as ruler of Kiev he set up idols of the Slavic gods and had several wives. Drawn to the faith his grandmother had embraced, he was baptised at Kherson in 988 with the name Basil and married Anna, the emperor's sister, and back in Kiev he had the idol of Perun dragged through the mud and thrown into the Dnieper, while his people waded into the river to be baptised. He built churches and schools, gave up his wars, and died on 15 July 1015, and the Orthodox honour him as equal to the apostles.
