  • The evening collect “Lighten our darkness” from the Book of Common Prayer asks God to “defend us from all perils and dangers of this night.”
  • Short prayers cover the end of a long day, a racing mind, sleeplessness, going to bed angry, fear and bad dreams, worry about tomorrow, loved ones and sleeping by day after a night shift.
  • Traditional night prayers are quoted from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, Catholic Compline in the 1888 دليل الصلوات and Orthodox Great Compline in Hapgood’s 1906 service book.
  • “Now I lay me down to sleep” first appeared in print in the 1737 New England Primer; its author is unknown.
  • Scripture calls sleep a gift: “for so he giveth his beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2), and Psalm 4:8 is a night prayer in itself.
  • Long-lasting sleeplessness needs a doctor as well as prayer; 988 (US) and Samaritans (116 123) answer at any hour.
