19 Bible Verses About the 7 Deadly Sins



  • The seven deadly sins are not a list found in the Bible; the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1866) calls them the capital sins, distinguished “following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great,” because “they engender other sins, other vices.”
  • Proverbs 6:16-19 lists seven things the Lord hates; haughty eyes matches pride on the later list, and two of its items concern false speech.
  • Galatians 5:19-21 names sexual immorality, fits of anger, envy and drunkenness among the works of the flesh and ends “and things like these.”
  • James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 quote the same line against pride: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
  • Hebrews 6:12 applies sluggishness to faith and hope, using the Greek word nothros that Hebrews 5:11 uses for “dull of hearing.”

The Bible has no list called the seven deadly sins, but it speaks to each of the seven. Proverbs 16:18 warns against pride, Proverbs 14:30 against envy and Ephesians 4:26-27 against lasting anger; Proverbs 6:6-8 answers sloth, Luke 12:15 greed, Proverbs 23:20-21 gluttony and Matthew 5:28 lust.
