20 Bible Verses About Fish

  • Genesis 1:21 places the creation of sea creatures on the fifth day, and Genesis 9:3 gives animals, fish among them, as food after the flood.
  • Leviticus 11:9 and Deuteronomy 14:9 allow water creatures with fins and scales; Mark 7:19 says Jesus “declared all foods clean.”
  • Jonah prays from inside the fish, and Jesus points to Jonah’s three days and nights there as “the sign of the prophet Jonah” (Matthew 12:39-40).
  • Four disciples were fishermen, and Jesus called them with the words “I will send you out to fish for people” (Mark 1:17).
  • Both Luke 5 and John 21 describe a night of catching nothing followed by a catch at Jesus’ word; John 21:11 counts 153 fish.

In the Bible, fish are part of creation and ordinary food, and several of Jesus’ disciples caught them for a living. Genesis 1:21 records their making, Leviticus 11:9 says which ones Israel may eat, and Jonah 1:17 tells of the huge fish that swallowed Jonah.
