Japanese In trouble, begin with one sentence: “Lord, I am in trouble and I cannot fix this alone. Show me the next right step, give me strength to take it, and keep me in your peace until it is over. Amen.” God invites exactly that: “call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee” (Psalm 50:15).
If trouble has brought you to despair or to thoughts of ending your life, call or text 988 in the US, or call Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK and Ireland. There are also more Christian and crisis lines. If the trouble is an illness, prayer goes alongside a doctor’s care and never replaces it.
Is there a strongest prayer for solving problems?
No prayer works by its wording. Jesus told his disciples not to pile up words: “use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him” (Matthew 6:7–8). A prayer in trouble can be one sentence. The tax collector in Jesus’ parable prayed only “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
Scripture does give promises that Christians have prayed in trouble for centuries. Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 34:17 says, “The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”
Psalm 91 is commonly prayed for protection in times of hardship. The Greek Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate number it Psalm 90, and so do Orthodox service books. Russian Orthodox Christians know it by its Church Slavonic opening, “Живый в помощи Вышняго” (“He who lives in the help of the Most High”), and the Orthodox Church reads it every day at the service of the Sixth Hour. It begins and ends:
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. …
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

Traditional prayers in time of trouble
In all troubles and adversities
This prayer comes from the Litany in the Episcopal Church’s 1928 Book of Common Prayer. It asks help against evils that come “of the devil or man,” so it fits a quarrel, a lawsuit or an enemy as well as a misfortune.
O God, merciful Father, who despisest not the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire of such as are sorrowful; Mercifully assist our prayers which we make before thee in all our troubles and adversities, whensoever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils which the craft and subtilty of the devil or man worketh against us, may, by thy good providence, be brought to nought; that we thy servants, being hurt by no persecutions, may evermore give thanks unto thee in thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. When worry will not let go

When you do not know what to do

Many people in trouble also say the Serenity Prayer. The American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr composed an early version in the 1930s, and Alcoholics Anonymous later adopted it. It asks God for serenity to accept what cannot be changed, courage to change what can, and wisdom to know the difference.
Prayers for particular troubles
At night, when worry keeps you awake
Lord, I have gone over this problem a hundred times, and it is no smaller. I give it to you for tonight. Your word says, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Let me sleep, and let me face it tomorrow with a clearer head. Amen.
When you are close to despair
God, I have tried everything I know, and nothing has worked. I am tired of hoping. “Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD” (Psalm 130:1). Hear me now. Send me one person who can help, and give me enough strength for today. Amen.
In a quarrel or a lawsuit
Lord, this dispute has taken over my days. Keep me honest in what I say and write, and keep me from answering anger with anger. Soften the hearts on both sides, bring the matter to a fair end, and as far as it depends on me, let me “live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:18). Amen.
When money has run out
Father, the bills are more than I can pay, and I am ashamed and afraid. Give us what we need for this week. Show me where to cut back, whom to ask for help, and what work I can find. Keep me from debts I cannot carry, and let me trust you for tomorrow. Amen.
When work has become a burden
Lord, work has become a place of conflict and pressure. Give me patience with the people I find hardest, fairness toward those under me, and honesty when it costs me. You shut the lions’ mouths for Daniel (Daniel 6:22); protect me from those who want me to fail. If it is time to leave, open another door. Amen.
When the trouble is an illness
Lord Jesus, a woman who had been ill for twelve years said, “If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole” (Mark 5:28), and you healed her. I bring you this illness now. Guide the doctors, ease the pain, and heal me if it is your will. Where healing is slow, let your grace be sufficient for me (2 Corinthians 12:9). Amen.
When someone has hurt you and you cannot forgive
Father, I cannot forgive this on my own, and I am tired of carrying it. On the cross your Son prayed, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Give me a little of that grace. I do not have to pretend it did not happen, but take the bitterness out of me. Amen.
When the trouble is your own fault
Lord, I made this mess, and I cannot undo it. I confess it to you. You promised, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9). Forgive me, show me how to make amends where I can, and keep me from making the same mistake again. Amen.
When the problem looks impossible
God, from where I stand there is no way out of this. You rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39). Say it over this. My faith is small; Jesus said faith “as a grain of mustard seed” is enough (Matthew 17:20). “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief” (Mark 9:24). Amen.
When the trouble feels like a spiritual attack
Lord, I feel pressed from every side, and I am afraid. Clothe me in “the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day” (Ephesians 6:13). Keep my mind on what is true. “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Amen.
Does prayer replace doing something about the problem?
Scripture pairs prayer with action. When enemies threatened the builders of Jerusalem’s wall, Nehemiah wrote, “Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night” (Nehemiah 4:9). The Book of Common Prayer’s prayer “For Guidance” asks for grace to see “what thou wouldest have us to do.” A prayer in trouble can include the practical steps: a call to a doctor, a lawyer, a debt adviser, a pastor or a friend.
Prayer does not promise that the trouble will end on a set date. Jesus told his disciples plainly, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Paul asked three times for his own affliction to be taken away and was told, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
