Prayers for Endurance and Patience: Strength to Keep Going

  • The King James Version translates the Greek hypomonē, steadfast endurance, as “patience” 29 of the 32 times it appears, as in James 1:3 and Hebrews 12:1; makrothymia, patience with people, is usually “longsuffering.”
  • Short prayers for endurance cover exhaustion, strength of will, wanting to quit, long illness or caregiving, recurring temptation, loneliness, starting again and feeling overwhelmed.
  • Prayers for patience cover other people, parenting, work, marriage, waiting and anger.
  • Traditional prayers are quoted from the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers (“For the gift of Patience,” “A Prayer for Patience”), the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (Palm Sunday and Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany collects) and Longfellow’s translation of Saint Teresa’s bookmark.
  • Scripture’s examples of endurance include the farmer and Job (James 5:7–11), and Jesus’ words “In your patience possess ye your souls” (Luke 21:19).
  • Anyone for whom giving up means ending their life can call or text 988 in the US or call Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK and Ireland.

Endurance can be asked for one day at a time: “Lord, I am tired and this is not over. Give me strength for today and patience for what I cannot change yet. Hold on to me when I cannot hold on to you.
