- Twelve short prayers cover a friend, someone in a hard time, the sick, the grieving, someone you love, someone far away, a hard decision, money trouble, someone who does not believe, someone who hurt you, someone who asked for prayer and a need you do not know.
- The apostles’ written prayers for others (Ephesians 3:16–19; Philippians 1:9–10; Colossians 1:9–11; 2 Thessalonians 3:16; 3 John 2) can be prayed for one person by name.
- Traditional prayers are quoted from the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers (“For our Friends”) and Hapgood’s 1906 Orthodox service book: the Compline prayer “Forgive, O Lord who lovest man,” also said before sleep in Russian homes, and the Liturgy of St. Basil’s prayer for those “whom we … have not remembered.”
- Scripture commands prayer “for all men” (1 Timothy 2:1) and records Abraham, Job and Jesus praying for others (Genesis 18; Job 42:10; Luke 22:32; John 17:15).
- Orthodox Christians have names remembered at the Liturgy by sending altar bread or a written note; Catholics can ask a priest to offer a Mass for someone living (canon 901).
