16 Psalms for Anxiety and Fear



  • In the NIV, Psalm 94:19 speaks of “anxiety” and Psalm 139:23 of “anxious thoughts.”
  • Psalm 56:8 asks God to “list my tears on your scroll.”
  • Psalm 55:17 describes crying out “evening, morning and noon” before verse 22 tells the listener to cast their cares on the Lord.
  • Psalm 31:5, “Into your hands I commit my spirit,” is the line Jesus speaks in Luke 23:46, and Psalm 91:11-12 is quoted by the devil in Matthew 4:6.
  • “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) follows the description of God making wars cease and continues “I will be exalted among the nations.”

The Psalms name anxiety, fear and distress directly and set them beside words of trust in God. Some verses are spoken to God, as in Psalm 139:23-24; some are spoken by the psalmist to his own soul, as in Psalm 42:11; and some are instructions to others, as in Psalm 55:22 and Psalm 31:24.
