  • Ephesians 5:25 measures a husband’s love by Christ, who “gave himself up” for the church, and verse 28 adds loving a wife as one’s own body.
  • 1 Peter 3:7 calls a wife an heir with her husband of the gift of life and ties his treatment of her to whether his prayers are hindered.
  • Malachi 2:14-16 calls the Lord the witness between a man and the wife of his youth and says the man who hates and divorces her “does violence to the one he should protect.”
  • The Hebrew word for “helper” in Genesis 2:18, ezer, is also used of God in Psalm 33:20.
  • 1 Timothy 5:1-2 tells Timothy to treat older women as mothers and younger women as sisters, “with absolute purity.”

The Bible tells a man to love his wife, to be faithful to her and to treat her with respect, and to treat the other women in his life as family. The instructions to husbands come in three New Testament letters (Ephesians 5:21-33; Colossians 3:18-19; 1 Peter 3:1-7), which address wives and husbands side by side.
