Deuteronomy 6:5 commands love for God with all the heart, soul and strength, and in Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus calls it the first and greatest commandment.
In 1 Chronicles 28:9 David charges Solomon to serve God “with wholehearted devotion”, and 1 Kings 11:4 records that in old age Solomon’s heart “was not fully devoted” to the Lord.
Joshua 24:15, Ruth 1:16-17 and Daniel 3:17-18 each record a spoken choice to serve one God rather than other gods.
Matthew 6:24 uses “devoted” for a servant choosing between two masters, and names money as the rival to God.
Acts 2:42 and Colossians 4:2 use devotion for practices: the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer.

In the Bible, devotion is love for God that keeps nothing back and serves no rival. Deuteronomy 6:5 commands it, and Jesus calls that command the first and greatest (Matthew 22:37-38). Joshua 24:15, Ruth 1:16-17 and Daniel 3:17-18 show people choosing it; Jeremiah 2:2 and 1 Kings 11:4 show it fading. The NIV uses “devotion” and “devoted” for three kinds of object.
