- A thousand is the Bible’s way of saying “more than you can count” — a quantity that has stopped being a quantity.
- Psalm 50:10’s cattle on a thousand hills is not a survey but an argument that the sacrificial system never supplied God with anything.
- Deuteronomy 7:9 promises covenant love to a thousand generations, set against punishment to the third and fourth. The asymmetry is the point.
- Psalm 90:4 and 2 Peter 3:8 use a thousand years to answer people who thought a promise was late: they are using the wrong instrument to measure.
- Revelation 20’s thousand years has been read three main ways throughout church history. Nearly every number in that book does symbolic work, which is a reason to read it carefully before reading it as a calendar.
